About the Foundation
Preserving mbira heritage. Empowering future generations.
The Tendayi Gahamadze Foundation exists to preserve and advance the musical and cultural legacy of Zimbabwe's mbira tradition.
Established in honor of mbira artist Tendayi "Samaita" Gahamadze, the foundation works to ensure that mbira remains a living tradition rather than a forgotten artifact.
For centuries, the mbira has been central to Shona spiritual and cultural life, used in ceremonies, storytelling, and ancestral remembrance. Yet today many young Zimbabweans grow up without access to this tradition.
The foundation aims to restore that connection by placing mbira instruments in schools, supporting youth learning programs, documenting cultural knowledge, and sharing Zimbabwe's musical heritage with global audiences.
Through education, preservation, and cultural exchange, the Tendayi Gahamadze Foundation seeks to ensure that mbira continues to inspire future generations.
Our Vision
A world where every Zimbabwean child understands their cultural roots, where mbira music is globally recognized as a living heritage art form, and where Samaita's legacy inspires future generations of cultural ambassadors.
Our Mission
To preserve and advance Shona cultural heritage by teaching mbira music to young people, equipping schools with instruments and training, and immortalizing the artistic legacy of Tendayi Samaita Gahamadze.
